One of Sonam Kapoor’s ensembles towards the end of her Cannes trip was this ATSU Pret off-shoulder crop-top. Sonam’s top has more history attached to it with France than she, probably, knows. The wide neckline, popularly known as off-shoulder style, is actually called ‘bardot’ cut; named after a woman who helped revolutionise fashion in French popular culture. Brigitte Bardot was the sex symbol of 50s and 60s in France. Her fashion choices made way for avant garde style that sees its trails even today. Bardot made Cannes and St. Tropez famous by posing in numerous two-piece bikinis in all the beaches there. But, Brigitte is most remembered for the feminine, wide-neck tops and dresses she popularised. These Bardot cut was a favoured choice in Hindi films in the 80s and has made a comeback of sorts with designers adapting the neckline to enhance femininity!
The Bardot cut is being used with all kinds of ensembles, we realised! Here’s Sonam Kapoor in two instances wearing her saree with a Bardot cut blouse. This shows how fashion evolves and adapts to different cultures. A French phenomenon in the traditional Indian drape – looks lovely!
The Bardot cut was popular in America in the 70s. Perhaps, that’s why the cut instantly reminds us of the retro age! The fascination to doll-up women in those pretty, perfect frocks and skater dresses hasn’t died (thankfully!) still. Here’s Alia Bhatt in a pretty little dress with the Bardot neckling accentuating her décolletage. Ileana D’cruz looks stunning in a Barbie style pink bardot cut dress!
The wide neck cut in Bardot tops help underscore a woman’s shoulders and neck. So, interestingly, women of broad and petite frame can wear these and look pretty. Also, these really can be paired with almost anything! Deepika wore hers with a midi skirt while Elli Avram chose an Flamenco style white skirt with hers.
It’s lovely how versatile a bardot top is! Sonakshi Sinha paired her palazzos one in desi style and it looks amazing, doesn’t it! The Bardot cut complements women of every shape and that’s something we love about it.
Designers have been using the Bardot cut since ages! Here’s Sonam Kapoor in a rather dramatic Ralph and Russo Bardot cut gown. She sashayed in this dress at Cannes in 2015. Malaika Arora looked stunning in a Bardot cut evening gown. Her long neck was beautifully accentuated in the dress, don’t you think!
