5 Male Designers Who Have Changed The Face Of Indian Fashion!

The apparels we awe at, that the celebrities wear, are the end result of a long arduous process of fashion designing. Designers are the true craftsmen behind the marvelous creations we see stars wearing, that makes them look majestic! It’s a designer’s vision that we ultimately see on the red carpet. Some male designers, especially the 5 we have listed, who have brought in a tide of modernity and state-of-the-art style in the world of fashion in India. Here’s a tribute to them…

1. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla

This duo has been making the most exquisite outfits forever. Sandeep Khosla was born in a family that owned a leather business. That gave Sandeep early lessons in leather carving and tie and dye techniques. He later worked with Xerxes Bhatena in Mumbai, the man who gave Sandeep his first break. Abu Jani, on the other hand, was born in an affluent Bohra Muslim family and his family socialized with crème-de-la-creme since he was young, which gave him the exposure to class, elegance and royalty. Abu worked with Xerxes too and dealt with a lot of garment traders that got him interested in fabrics and textile. In 1986, Abu and Sandeep met and they describe their meeting as ‘magnetic’. Since then the duo has been dressing the Bachchan family and Dame Judi Dench, among many many others!

Raghavendra Rathore’s inspiration is his root – Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Every creative idea stems from his love for the city, its culture and heritage. Born in an affluent family, Rathore’s family history runs back to 1200 years! Raghavendra studied design from Parsons School of Design and worked with Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan. In 1994, he founded his own label and has dressed the most plutocratic community in India and across the world.

Manish Malhotra is the most moved fashion designer of Bollywood. From the Kapoors to the Bachchans, everyone in the Hindi film industry swears by his designs. Manish was born in Mumbai and he worked as a model while studying in Elphinston College. Manish brought in the concept of ‘styling’ for celebrities in films, according to their characters. Since then, Manish has worked on over 1000 films!

Rohit Bal has been in the fashion industry for a long time and he is one of the most reticent of the lot. Rohit studied in St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and graduated with a degree in History. He then worked in his family business and opened his own label in 1990. Rohit dresses people like Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell among many elites in the world. His use of velvet is quite unique and he is known for the lotus and peacock motifs we often see in his designs.

5. Shantanu & Nikhil

Nikhil Mehra studied design and fashion from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise in Los Angeles while Shantanu was busy getting a finance degree. The two worked in the United States of America for a while before shifting their focus to India and co-founding a label. Shantanu and Nikhil have dressed the elites of elite community in India and abroad. Their design speaks modernity and progression.
