Sonakshi Sinha’s look from her upcoming film ‘Noor’ came out today and we couldn’t help but realise how stereotypical journalists are shown as in Bollywood. Over the years actresses who have played reporters on screen have been shown in a typical activist look that involves jholas, khadi kurtas or loose shirts and combat boots. It’s as if all journalists are either about to go cover a war or attending a Page 3 party! Here’s a look at all the looks actresses have donned over the years to play a journalist on screen…
Sonakshi Sinha’s look in Noor that released today didn’t surprise us at all. There are two looks released. In one she’s wearing nerdy big frame glasses, a jacket and cap and some silver oxidized rings. In the other Sonakshi is seen in loose light colour kurta with a jhola. Now, this is what we mean when we say a journalist’s look being stereotyped! A journalist is not always wearing loose kurtas and carrying cloth jholas, guys!
Preity Zinta’s look in Lakshya’s was the makers trying to copy veteran broadcast journalist Barkha Dutt’s look, except they decided to give their own ‘curly’ twist to it! Preity’s character was a war journalist and she was shown with a short, cropped hair cut because, apparently, women reporters at war scenes cannot have long hair! She wore combat boots, trousers and t-shirts most of the time in the film…
Rule no. 1 to look like a journalist in films – carry a sling bag. That, along with loose worn out shirts, dirty trousers perfectly make a reporter’s look on screen. Nargis Fakhri donned boots, a bag, tank tops and loose t-shirts in Madras Café. While she looked gorgeous in it… We can’t get beyond the fact that journalists are always portrayed in a typical ‘haven’t showered in days’ manner!
She is the ultimate journalist material for screen, isn’t she! She too was given loose tops to wear in the Madhur Bhandarkar film. Also, she was carrying a jhola, maintaining the age old rule to look like an authentic reporter on screen.
Rani Mukerji was slightly different. Her character in No One Killed Jessica was a feisty, go-getter who dressed in crisp, formal shirts and tight pants. She looked hot in them! Rani’s character had makeup on her in the film, a rare for journalists shown on silver screen!
Anushka Sharma’s clothes in PK were cute till the time she was shown in Belgium. She was shown in cute floral dresses, back-packs and what not! But, then she came back to India and started working as an anchor in a news channel. Her clothes became as drab as the any other journalist’s ensembles shown…Sadly!
